Older Nigerian CV templates open with a long "Personal Data" block: date of birth, sex, marital status, religion, state of origin, local government area (LGA), hometown and permanent address. Most private-sector recruiters no longer need any of it to shortlist you, and it pushes your experience down the page.
| Detail | Keep or drop? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Name, phone, email, city | Keep | Recruiters call or WhatsApp shortlisted candidates |
| LinkedIn URL | Keep | Many Lagos and Abuja recruiters check it |
| Date of birth / age | Drop, unless asked | Some graduate trainee ads set an age limit; the application form will ask |
| State of origin and LGA | Drop from the CV | Public-sector and some corporate forms ask for it separately |
| Marital status, religion | Drop | Not relevant to your ability to do the job |
| Photo | Drop, unless asked | Not a local norm for most roles |
| NYSC status | Keep (graduates) | Employers commonly ask for proof of service before hiring |
The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, overseen by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, governs how organisations handle personal data. Sending less of it is simply safer: a CV gets forwarded, uploaded and stored many times.
Exceptions
Follow the ad. If a federal agency, state civil service or graduate trainee program asks for date of birth, state of origin or a passport photograph, provide exactly what it requests, usually on its own form rather than on your CV.
