India CV Format (2026): What Indian Recruiters Expect, With Examples

By EZProCV Editorial Team · Updated

The India CV format has changed a lot in the last decade. Older templates passed down from seniors still open with a passport photo, date of birth, father's name and marital status, and end with "I hereby declare that the above information is true to the best of my knowledge." Recruiters at Indian companies, startups and multinationals now expect something closer to an international CV: short, skills-first and full of results.

This guide is for freshers and experienced professionals applying to private-sector jobs in India, and for anyone in India applying abroad, especially to the Gulf. It explains the difference between a resume, a CV and a biodata, which personal details to keep or cut, how to present 10th and 12th marks and CGPA, how notice period and CTC fit in, and what changes for overseas applications.

In India, "CV" and "resume" are used interchangeably for the job document. We use "CV" here.

Quick answer: An Indian CV for private-sector jobs is a 1–2 page, reverse-chronological document: one page for freshers, two for experienced candidates. Include contact details, a short summary, key skills, work experience, education with CGPA or percentage, and certifications. Leave out photo, father's name, religion and caste. Notice period is useful; the "I hereby declare" line is optional and mainly for government forms.

Resume, CV or biodata: what do Indian employers want?

In India, three words get mixed up:

Term What it is in India Use it for
Resume / CV 1–2 page summary of skills, experience and education Almost all private-sector jobs
Academic CV Longer record of research, publications, teaching Faculty, PhD and research roles
Biodata Personal-details document: date of birth, father's name, religion, address, height, family Marriage proposals; occasionally small local employers

If a recruiter at a company asks for your "biodata", they almost always mean your CV. Send a proper CV, not a list of personal details. Government jobs are different again: they use their own application forms, so follow the form exactly and keep your CV for interviews or as an attachment.

The practical rule: one CV format for corporate jobs, tailored to each role, and official forms for government recruitment.

Which personal details should an Indian CV include?

Older Indian templates carry a "Personal Details" block at the bottom. Most of it can go.

Detail Keep or cut? Why
Name, mobile, email, city Keep Recruiters call before they email
LinkedIn or portfolio Keep Expected for most white-collar roles
Full home address, PIN code Cut to city and state Not needed to shortlist you
Photo Cut, unless asked Takes space and parses poorly in an ATS
Date of birth Optional Rarely needed; government forms ask separately
Father's name, marital status Cut Not relevant to your ability to do the job
Religion, caste, gender Cut Not relevant; belongs only in official forms that require it
Languages known Keep Useful for customer-facing and regional roles
Notice period Keep if relevant Indian recruiters ask early; stating it saves a call
Current and expected CTC Usually omit Share in the application form or the recruiter call
"I hereby declare…" Optional Expected on some government and PSU forms; unnecessary for private jobs

CTC (cost to company) is the total annual cost of your employment, and Indian recruiters almost always ask for current and expected CTC. Keep the number off the CV so you can discuss it in context, but have it ready.

How to present education: CGPA, percentages, 10th and 12th

Indian recruiters, especially in campus hiring, often screen on academic scores, so the education section matters more than in many countries.

Freshers and early-career (0–3 years): list all three levels.

B.Tech, Computer Science and Engineering | Fictional Institute of Technology, Pune | 2026 | CGPA 8.4/10 Class 12 (CBSE) | Fictional Public School, Nagpur | 2022 | 91% Class 10 (CBSE) | Fictional Public School, Nagpur | 2020 | 94%

Experienced (4+ years): keep your degree and any postgraduate qualification. You can drop Class 10 and 12 unless a form or employer specifically asks.

Tips:

  • Write the scale with the score: CGPA 7.9/10, not just 7.9.
  • If your university uses a percentage conversion formula, use the official one if you convert.
  • If your score is weak, you don't have to show it, but some campus recruiters will ask. Strong projects and internships help balance it.
  • List backlogs only if an application form asks.

How to write work experience Indian recruiters notice

The most common weakness in Indian CVs is a list of responsibilities copied from the job description. Recruiters want to see what changed because you were there.

Weak:

Responsible for preparing MIS reports and handling client queries.

Strong:

Automated 12 weekly MIS reports in Power BI, cutting preparation time from 2 days to 3 hours for a 40-member sales team.

For each role:

  1. Start every bullet with a verb (built, led, reduced, launched, negotiated).
  2. Add a number: volume, value in INR, percentage, people, time.
  3. Name the tools, so portal searches pick you up.
  4. Show promotions inside one company as separate titles with their own dates.

If you're a fresher, internships, final-year projects, freelance work and college roles are your experience. Give them the same treatment. See the student resume example for a fresher layout.

Job portals, ATS and campus hiring in India

Most private-sector hiring in India runs through job portals such as Naukri, LinkedIn, Indeed and foundit, employee referrals, recruitment consultants and campus placement drives. Larger employers and multinationals typically use an applicant tracking system (ATS), software that stores applications and lets recruiters search and filter them. The government's National Career Service portal, run by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, lists domestic and international vacancies and job fairs, and states that it charges no fee at any stage.

To be found:

  • Match keywords to the job description: tools, certifications, domain terms.
  • Keep the layout simple. Single column or a clean two-column layout, standard headings, no text inside images.
  • Update your portal profiles with the same title and skills as your CV. Recruiters search portal databases directly, so an outdated profile can undercut a good CV.
  • Name the file clearly: Aditi_Sharma_Data_Analyst.pdf, not resume_final_new2.pdf.

Applying from India to jobs abroad

Your CV needs adjusting depending on where you apply:

Emigration rules. If your passport carries ECR (Emigration Check Required) status, you may need emigration clearance through the government's eMigrate system before taking up a job in certain countries, which include the Gulf states. eMigrate also lists recruiting agents registered with the government. Check your status and the current rules there, as of October 2026, before paying anyone. Never pay an unregistered agent, and treat any offer that needs an upfront fee for a "sure-shot visa" with suspicion.

Many Gulf employers also ask for attested degree certificates at the visa stage, so start that paperwork early. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Keep it to one page as a fresher and two pages with experience
  • Lead with a summary and key skills that match the job description
  • Quantify results in work experience: INR values, percentages, volumes
  • Show CGPA with its scale and, for freshers, Class 10 and 12 scores
  • Mention notice period if you are currently employed
  • Keep your Naukri and LinkedIn profiles consistent with your CV

Don't

  • Don't send a biodata with father's name, religion and caste to a company
  • Don't add a passport photo unless the employer asks
  • Don't copy responsibilities from your job description
  • Don't put current and expected CTC on the CV itself
  • Don't use an objective statement full of generic phrases like "challenging position"
  • Don't pay an unregistered agent for an overseas job

Frequently asked questions

Not for private-sector jobs. The declaration line is a holdover from older biodata-style CVs and takes space you could use for results. Some government departments, PSUs and recruitment forms still ask for a declaration with date, place and signature; in that case, follow the form's instructions exactly. For corporate applications, ending with your last relevant section is fine.
If you're a fresher or have under about three years of experience, yes: campus recruiters and many HR teams still screen on them. List board, school, year and percentage. Once you have several years of solid work experience, you can drop them and keep only your degrees, unless an employer or form specifically asks.
Usually not. Indian recruiters will ask for current and expected CTC in the application form or first call, and giving it there lets you explain the components (fixed, variable, benefits). On the CV itself, focus on what you've achieved. If a job posting explicitly asks for CTC in the CV, add one line near your notice period.
No, not for most private-sector jobs. Recruiters shortlist on skills and experience, and photos can confuse ATS parsing. Some employers, airlines, hospitality and Gulf recruiters ask for a photo; add a recent, professional headshot only when asked. Government forms that need a photo will tell you the exact size and format.
A one-page, reverse-chronological CV: contact details, a two-line objective tied to the role, key skills, projects, internships, education with CGPA and Class 10/12 scores, certifications, and achievements. Put projects and internships above education if they are strong. Our CV maker has ATS-friendly templates you can fill in and download free.
Use a Gulf-style CV: the same core sections, plus nationality, visa status, notice period and often a photo, because Gulf employers sponsor visas and want to know your availability. Read our guides to the UAE resume format and the Qatar CV format, and check eMigrate if your passport has ECR status.
