Accountant Resume Example (2026): Template, Summary and Skills

By EZProCV Editorial Team · Updated

This accountant resume example is for staff, general, senior and corporate accountants in industry or public accounting, plus graduates working toward a CPA, ACCA or Chartered Accountant qualification. You get a full sample resume as text, summaries for three levels, before-and-after bullets, skills, ATS keywords and notes on what changes between countries.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, accountants examine financial statements for accuracy and compliance, compute taxes and prepare returns, inspect accounting systems for efficiency and fraud risk, and recommend ways to cut costs and improve profit (BLS). Hiring managers look for proof that you do those things accurately, on deadline and with a bit of business sense.

Accuracy is the whole job, so your resume has to be flawless too: consistent dates, matching numbers and no typos.

Quick answer: A strong accountant resume leads with your credential (CPA, ACCA, CA or progress toward it), then shows results in close, reporting, audit and tax work: days cut from month-end close, accounts reconciled, audit findings, savings found and systems implemented. List GAAP or IFRS, ERP and Excel skills, keep it to one or two pages, and use the job ad's terms so an applicant tracking system matches you.

How to write an accountant resume summary

Lead with your credential, because it's often the first thing a hiring manager filters on. Then:

  1. Years and setting (public accounting, industry, government, nonprofit).
  2. Your core area: close and reporting, audit, tax, cost or management accounting.
  3. One or two results with numbers.
  4. Standards and systems (US GAAP or IFRS, the ERP you use).

ACCA-qualified accountant with 5 years in retail and hospitality groups. Runs the monthly close and IFRS reporting for 4 entities, cut the close from 8 to 5 days and supported a clean first audit after a group restructuring. Strong in SAP, consolidations and Excel modeling.

If you're still qualifying, say exactly where you are: "passed 3 of 4 CPA exam sections" or "ACCA, 9 of 13 exams passed".

How do you list a CPA, ACCA or CA qualification?

Put your credential in three places: after your name or headline ("Grace Mensah, CPA"), in your summary and in a Certifications section with the issuing body and jurisdiction.

Credential Where it matters How to write it
CPA United States "Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Georgia" or "CPA candidate, 3 of 4 sections passed"
ACCA UK, Ireland, Gulf, South Asia, Africa "ACCA member" or "ACCA, Strategic Professional exams in progress"
CA (ICAI) India "Chartered Accountant, ICAI" or "CA Final, Group I cleared"
CIMA, ICAEW UK and international "CIMA, Management level" or "ACA, ICAEW"
CMA, CIA US and international Full name and issuing body

BLS notes that accountants who file reports with the SEC must be licensed CPAs and that states require 150 semester hours of coursework. ACCA requires exams, an ethics module and three years' practical experience (ACCA).

What accomplishments should an accountant put on a resume?

Accounting results are very measurable. Strong areas to quantify:

  • Speed: days cut from the monthly or year-end close.
  • Accuracy: reconciliations completed, error rates, adjustments avoided.
  • Audit: clean opinions, no material weaknesses, audit fees or time reduced.
  • Savings: duplicate payments found, vendor terms improved, tax savings.
  • Systems: ERP migrations, automation, reporting dashboards.
  • Scale: revenue of the business, number of entities, accounts or clients.

Give context with each number: "for a $140M distributor with 3 entities" helps the reader judge what you handled.

Which skills and software should an accountant list?

BLS lists analytical and critical-thinking, communication, detail orientation, math and organizational skills as key qualities. O*NET's accountant profile names software such as QuickBooks, Sage 50, Microsoft Dynamics, Oracle PeopleSoft, SAP, Workday, Excel and Tableau (O*NET OnLine).

On your resume:

  • Name the accounting standard you work under: US GAAP, IFRS or local GAAP.
  • Name the exact ERP and version family (SAP S/4HANA, Oracle NetSuite).
  • Be specific about Excel: pivot tables, XLOOKUP, Power Query, macros.
  • Add tax software if you prepare returns.

Recruiters often search by system name, so a missing ERP can cost you a match.

How long and what format should an accountant resume be?

One page suits graduates and staff accountants; two pages suit senior accountants and managers. Use reverse-chronological order, standard headings and right-aligned dates. A conservative design fits the profession.

The Compact One-Page layout in the EZProCV templates was designed with financial accountants in mind. Fill it in, check every figure twice and download a text-based PDF that an applicant tracking system can read. Pair it with a tailored letter; see our accountant cover letter example.

How a accountant resume changes by country

US & Canada

Resume of one or two pages, no photo, and US GAAP experience up front. BLS reports a median annual wage of $83,680 for accountants and auditors (May 2025) and projects 5% employment growth from 2025 to 2035, with about 115,300 openings a year (BLS). In Canada, the main designation is CPA Canada; list ASPE or IFRS experience.

UK & Ireland

Send a two-page CV with a personal profile, no photo, and your ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW or AAT status clearly stated. The National Careers Service lists management accountant pay from £30,000 (starter) to £60,000 (experienced) and describes training routes through CIMA, ACCA and the IFA (National Careers Service). See the UK CV format guide.

Gulf (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar)

Gulf employers usually want IFRS experience and often VAT, corporate tax or zakat knowledge; name the ERP you used. ACCA, CPA and CA holders are all common, so state your body and membership level. Many CVs include a photo, nationality, visa status and notice period. See the UAE resume format and Saudi Arabia CV format guides.

India

The Chartered Accountant qualification from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India carries strong weight; state your status (CA, CA Inter, articleship completed). List Ind AS, GST and TDS experience and software such as Tally or SAP. Employers often ask for current CTC and notice period. See the India CV format guide.

Common accountant resume mistakes

  • Typos or numbers that don't add up. In accounting, one error on the resume suggests errors in the ledger.
  • Hiding your qualification status. "CPA eligible", "2 of 4 sections passed" or "ACCA member" should be easy to find.
  • Not naming the accounting standard or ERP. Recruiters filter on US GAAP, IFRS, SAP and NetSuite.
  • Duty lists with no scale. Say how big the business was and how many entities or accounts you handled.
  • Vague Excel claims. Replace "advanced Excel" with what you actually build: models, Power Query flows, macros.
  • Sharing confidential client details. Describe audit clients by industry and size, not by name.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, if you hold an active license: "Grace Mensah, CPA" in the header, plus a Certifications line with the state. If you're not licensed yet, don't add it to your name. Instead write "CPA candidate, 3 of 4 exam sections passed" in your summary and Certifications section.
Lead with your degree, relevant courses (intermediate accounting, tax, audit) and exam progress. Add internships, volunteer tax preparation, student society treasurer roles or part-time bookkeeping as experience with real bullets. Show software skills such as Excel and QuickBooks. The student resume example has more ideas.
An accountant resume focuses on accuracy, compliance and reporting: close, reconciliations, audit and tax. A financial analyst resume focuses on forward-looking analysis: forecasting, modeling, valuation and recommendations. If you're moving from accounting to analysis, see the financial analyst resume example.
Yes, they show scale. For public accounting, give the number and type of engagements ("25+ audits of private companies with $5M–$200M revenue") and the number of returns prepared. Describe clients by industry and size rather than naming them, to respect confidentiality.
It helps, particularly for firms with structured recruiting and for career changers. Keep it to one page, mention your qualification status, one or two results and why this firm or industry. See our accountant cover letter example or use the cover letter builder.
