Quick answer: A strong software engineer resume fits on one page (two for senior engineers) and opens with a three-line summary naming your stack and level. Each role lists 4–6 bullets that pair a technical action with a measurable result, such as latency, uptime, cost or release speed. Add a grouped skills section, links to GitHub or a portfolio, and save it as a text-based PDF.
Mateo Fernández
Senior Software Engineer, Backend and Distributed Systems
Austin, TX, USA · mateo.fernandez@example.com · +1 555 0142 · linkedin.com/in/mateofernandez-example · github.com/mateofernandez-example
Backend-focused software engineer with 9 years of experience building high-traffic payment and logistics services in Go, Java and Python. Led the move of a monolith to event-driven microservices on AWS that cut checkout latency by 41% and on-call pages by half. Comfortable owning a service end to end, from design doc to production metrics, and mentoring engineers through code review and pairing.
Senior Software Engineer · Northwind Payments
Austin, TX · Apr 2022 – Present
- Led design and rollout of an event-driven checkout service (Go, Kafka, PostgreSQL) handling 9,000 requests per second at peak, cutting p95 latency from 620 ms to 365 ms.
- Split a 400K-line Java monolith into 11 services behind a gRPC gateway, letting four teams deploy independently and raising release frequency from weekly to daily.
- Introduced contract tests and canary deploys in GitHub Actions and Argo CD, reducing production rollbacks by 63% over three quarters.
- Cut AWS compute spend by $410K a year by right-sizing EKS node groups and moving batch jobs to Spot instances without breaching SLOs.
- Mentored five engineers (two promoted to mid-level) and ran the backend guild's monthly design review.
Software Engineer · Blue Harbor Logistics
Dallas, TX · Jun 2019 – Mar 2022
- Built a route-optimization API in Python and FastAPI used by 1,200 drivers daily, reducing average delivery time per stop by 12%.
- Replaced nightly CSV imports with a change-data-capture pipeline (Debezium, Kafka), giving dispatchers shipment data within 30 seconds instead of next morning.
- Raised unit and integration test coverage on the core shipments service from 38% to 81%, and cut escaped defects by 45%.
- Added structured logging and Grafana dashboards that shortened mean time to resolution from 3 hours to 50 minutes.
Junior Software Engineer · Cedar Point Software
San Antonio, TX · Jul 2017 – May 2019
- Shipped 30+ features for a React and Node.js scheduling app serving 85 clinics.
- Rewrote slow SQL reports with proper indexing, cutting page load from 9 seconds to 1.4 seconds.
- Automated the release checklist with Bash and Jenkins, saving the team about 6 hours per sprint.
- ratelimit-go: Open-source token-bucket rate limiter for Go services; used in production by several small teams and maintained on GitHub.

Entry-level
Computer science graduate with internship experience building REST APIs in Java and Spring Boot and a React front end for a campus booking app used by 2,000 students. Comfortable with Git, unit testing and code review, and eager to grow on a team that ships to production every week.
Mid-level
Software engineer with 4 years of experience building and scaling Python and TypeScript services on AWS. Owned a billing API processing $30M a year, cut its error rate by 70% and led the move to containerized deploys. Known for clear design docs and dependable on-call work.
Senior
Senior software engineer with 9 years of experience designing distributed systems for fintech and e-commerce. Set the technical direction for a 14-engineer platform group, led a monolith-to-microservices migration with no customer-facing downtime, and mentored six engineers into senior roles.
Use the terms that appear in the job ad you're applying to — exactly as written — wherever they truthfully describe your experience. These come up most often for this role:
Strong bullets follow action + technical detail + result. Start with a verb (built, migrated, reduced, designed), name the tools, then show what changed.
Good results to quantify:
- Speed: latency, page load, build time, deploy frequency
- Reliability: uptime, incidents, rollbacks, mean time to resolution
- Scale: requests per second, users, records, services
- Cost: cloud spend, licenses, engineering hours saved
- Quality: test coverage, defect rates, security findings closed
If you don't have exact figures, use honest estimates you could explain in an interview ("about 30%", "roughly 6 hours a sprint"). Put your most impressive bullet first in each role, and keep each one to one or two lines.
O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, lists core software developer tasks such as analyzing user needs, designing and modifying software, and directing testing and validation. Your skills section should map to those tasks and to the job ad.
Group skills so they are easy to scan:

Example entries |

Spring Boot, FastAPI, React |
| Data |
PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka |
| Cloud and DevOps |
AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, GitHub Actions |

Only list tools you could discuss in a technical interview. A long list of half-known frameworks invites tough questions and dilutes your real strengths.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports a median annual wage of $134,040 in May 2025 for software developers, quality assurance analysts and testers, and projects employment to grow 10% from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations. Pay varies widely by city, industry and level, so check local data for your market.
What this means for your resume: demand is real, but so is the number of applicants per role. Tailor the top third of your resume, the headline, summary and first bullet of each job, to every application, and mirror the exact terms used in the job ad.
US & Canada
Call it a resume, keep it to 1–2 pages and leave out photos, age and marital status. Lead with impact metrics and link GitHub. In Canada, mention work authorization if you are on an open work permit. See our Canada resume format guide.
UK & Ireland
Employers say CV, and two pages is normal for experienced engineers. Use a short personal statement instead of a US-style summary, write dates as month and year, and state your right to work if you need no sponsorship. Our UK CV format guide covers the details.
Gulf (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar)
Gulf recruiters often expect nationality, visa status and notice period on the CV, and a professional photo is common. Highlight cloud, fintech and government digital-transformation projects. EZProCV's optional Gulf fields add these cleanly; see the UAE resume format.
India
Many Indian tech recruiters screen on years of experience, notice period and tech stack, so put all three near the top. Include competitive-programming ranks or open-source contributions if you are a fresher. Leave out date of birth and parents' names. See our India CV format guide.
