Relevant Coursework: Examples for 5 majors, over a photo of a modern university classroom with rows of desks

Quick answer: List relevant coursework on a resume when you are a student or recent graduate and have little direct experience in the field. Pick 4 to 8 course titles that match the job posting, write the full titles rather than course codes, and place them under your degree in the Education section. Remove them once internships or jobs prove the same skills.

Listing relevant coursework on resume pages is one of the simplest ways for a student or new graduate to show a recruiter what they already know. When you have no internship in the field yet, a short, targeted line of course titles says "I have studied the exact things this job uses." When you list every class you ever took, it says nothing at all.

This guide is for students, fresh graduates and career changers who have just finished a qualification, whether you call the document a resume (US, Canada) or a CV (UK, India, the Gulf, Africa). By the end you will know when coursework helps, which format to use, and you will have examples for five majors you can adapt.

When should you list relevant coursework on a resume?

Coursework earns its space when it fills a gap that experience cannot fill yet. Add it when:

  • You are a student or graduated recently and have little work experience in the field.
  • The posting asks for knowledge you learned in class, such as "understanding of financial statements" or "familiarity with machine learning."
  • You are changing careers with a new degree, diploma or postgraduate qualification.
  • Your major sounds broad. A "BA Business" could mean many things. "Supply Chain Analytics" and "Operations Management" make it specific.

DePaul University's College of Communication resume content guide puts the trade-off clearly: a coursework section can be useful if you do not yet have job experience in a field, but becomes redundant once your experience section already shows those skills.

Leave it off when:

  • You have a relevant internship, job or substantial project that proves the same knowledge.
  • The courses are introductory and implied by your degree ("Principles of Management" for a business graduate).
  • Space is tight and the line would push out a stronger experience bullet.

How many courses should you list?

Keep it short and targeted. The University of Vermont Career Center suggests listing 4 to 8 relevant class titles, and using course titles rather than numbers, because class numbers do not mean anything outside the university.

A practical rule: pick upper-level or specialized courses first, then the ones that use the same words as the job ad. Four strong, matching courses beat ten generic ones.

Where does relevant coursework go on a resume?

There are three common formats. The UVM guidance says the best location is a subsection of Education or a separate section just beneath it.

Format Best for How it looks
Inline under your degree Most students; saves space One line: "Relevant coursework: ..."
Bulleted list under Education 4–8 courses, two columns Short bullets below the degree
Separate "Relevant Coursework" section Career changers, or when courses are your main evidence Its own heading, sometimes with a one-line description per course

Option 1: Inline under your degree

Bachelor of Commerce, University of Cape Town, Expected Nov 2027 Relevant coursework: Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Taxation, Corporate Finance, Business Analytics

Option 2: Bullets under Education

BSc Computer Science, University of the Philippines Diliman, 2026 Relevant coursework:

  • Data Structures and Algorithms
  • Database Systems
  • Software Engineering
  • Computer Networks
  • Machine Learning

Option 3: A separate section with short descriptions

Use this when courses are your strongest evidence, for example after a career-change master's.

Relevant Coursework

  • Data Analytics for Business: cleaned and analyzed a 50,000-row retail dataset in Python; presented pricing recommendations.
  • Database Design: designed a normalized schema in PostgreSQL for a library booking system.
  • Data Visualization: built Tableau dashboards for a local charity's donor data.

The descriptions turn a course into proof. Mention the tool you used and what you produced. If a course project was large, the University of Kentucky's Stuckert Career Center notes that big course projects can also go under a relevant experience section.

Relevant coursework examples by major

Adapt these to your own transcript. Only list courses you actually completed or are taking now.

Business and finance

Relevant coursework: Corporate Finance, Financial Statement Analysis, Managerial Accounting, Business Statistics, Operations Management

For a finance analyst internship, lead with the finance courses. For an operations role, move Operations Management and Business Statistics to the front.

Computer science and IT

Relevant coursework: Data Structures and Algorithms, Object-Oriented Programming (Java), Database Systems, Operating Systems, Cloud Computing

Pair this with a Technical Skills line. Our guide to technical skills for a resume shows how to group languages and tools.

Engineering

Relevant coursework: Strength of Materials, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Finite Element Analysis, Engineering Design (SolidWorks capstone)

Engineering employers often care about software and design projects, so name the tool inside the course title or in a bracket.

Nursing

Relevant coursework: Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, Mental Health Nursing Clinical placements: Medical-surgical ward (240 hours), Pediatrics (120 hours)

For nursing and other health programs, clinical placements or rotations usually carry more weight than course titles, so list them with the unit and hours from your official record.

Marketing and communications

Relevant coursework: Consumer Behavior, Digital Marketing, Marketing Research, Brand Management, Social Media Strategy

If a course included a live client brief, add a bullet: "Developed a social media plan for a local café as part of Digital Marketing; campaign ran for four weeks."

How to match your coursework to the job ad

Coursework works best when it repeats the employer's language. Use this five-step method for each application:

  1. Highlight the knowledge requirements in the posting: subjects, methods and tools, not just job duties.
  2. Scan your transcript for courses that taught each one.
  3. Rewrite titles into plain words if your university uses an unusual name, without changing what the course was ("Quantitative Methods II" can become "Quantitative Methods: Regression Analysis" if that is what it covered).
  4. Order by relevance, with the closest match first.
  5. Back the top one with proof in a project or experience bullet if you can.

Here is how that works for a real-sounding posting:

Posting asks for: "Basic knowledge of financial reporting, Excel modeling, and variance analysis." Coursework line: Relevant coursework: Financial Reporting, Financial Modeling in Excel, Cost and Management Accounting (variance analysis)

Many employers search applications in an applicant tracking system (ATS), and course titles written in the posting's own words give a recruiter's search another match. Our guide to an ATS-friendly resume covers the formatting side.

Coursework, GPA and projects: how they fit together

Coursework is one part of your Education section, alongside your degree, dates, grades and honors. If your grades are strong, show them on the same line. Our guide to putting your GPA on a resume explains when and how, including UK classifications and Indian CGPA.

A complete student Education section might look like this:

BSc Mechanical Engineering, University of Lagos, Expected July 2027 CGPA: 4.3/5.0 · Dean's List (three semesters) Relevant coursework: Thermodynamics, Machine Design, Fluid Mechanics, Manufacturing Processes, Engineering Drawing (AutoCAD) Final-year project: Designed a low-cost solar water heater prototype; tested heat output against a commercial unit.

Common mistakes with relevant coursework

  • Listing every course. A transcript copy shows you did not tailor the resume.
  • Using course codes. "MKT 310" means nothing to a recruiter.
  • Including only introductory courses. "Introduction to Psychology" adds little for a psychology graduate.
  • Inflating titles. Renaming "Intro to Python" as "Advanced Software Development" will come out in an interview.
  • Keeping coursework forever. After a couple of years of relevant work, the line should go.
  • Mixing degree courses with online courses so the reader cannot tell which is which.
  • No link to the job. Every listed course should connect to something in the posting.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include course codes like CS 201 on my resume?
No. Course codes mean nothing outside your university, and a recruiter or applicant tracking system cannot match "ECON 342" to a job requirement. Write the full course title, such as "Econometrics" or "Data Structures and Algorithms." If a title is vague or internal, rename it to its plain subject, as long as the description stays accurate.

Can I list online courses as relevant coursework?
Yes, but keep them separate from your degree courses so nothing looks inflated. Put platform courses, bootcamps and short programs under a "Professional Development" or "Certifications" heading with the provider and year, such as "Google Data Analytics Certificate, Coursera, 2026." Degree coursework stays under the university it belongs to.

Should I list courses I am taking now?
Yes, if they are relevant. Mark them clearly so the reader knows they are in progress, for example "Financial Modeling (in progress)" or a separate line headed "Current coursework." Employers interviewing interns expect students to still be studying, and a current advanced course can show you are building exactly the skill the role needs.

Is relevant coursework useful for a master's or PhD graduate?
Sometimes. For a graduate degree in a new field, a short list of advanced or specialized courses can show depth that your earlier work history does not. For academic CVs and research roles, your thesis, publications and research methods usually matter more than course titles, so give those the space first and add coursework only if room remains.

Does relevant coursework help with applicant tracking systems?
It can, because course titles often contain the same terms as the job posting, such as "financial accounting", "pharmacology" or "machine learning." That gives a recruiter searching the system another match. It works only when the titles are written in plain words and the section is real text in a simple layout, not inside an image or a complex table.
