Teacher Cover Letter Example (2026): Full Sample, Openings and Tips

By EZProCV Editorial Team · Updated

This teacher cover letter example is for K-12 teachers applying to public, charter, private and international schools, including new teachers coming out of student teaching. It includes a complete letter from a high school math teacher, three alternative openings and a breakdown of what each paragraph shows a principal.

Principals and hiring committees read teacher cover letters for a sense of what you're like in a classroom. Your resume lists your license and positions. The letter should let them picture a lesson: what students are doing, how you know they're learning, and how you handle the ones who aren't yet.

For the matching resume, see the teacher resume example.

Quick answer: A strong teacher cover letter names your subject, grade level and license, then shows one classroom approach that improved student learning, with evidence such as assessment results, engagement or attendance. Show how you support different learners and work with families and colleagues, refer to something specific about the school, and keep it to 250 to 400 words on one page.

Dr. Angela Brooks, PrincipalNorthfield Community High SchoolNorthfield, IL

Dear Dr. Brooks,

The question I hear most in Algebra I is "When will I ever use this?" A few years ago I stopped answering it and started letting students find out. My ninth graders now spend one week each quarter on a project like pricing a food truck menu or budgeting a class trip, and they defend their numbers to the class. I'm applying for the Mathematics Teacher position at Northfield, and I'd love to bring that approach to your students.

At Ridgeway High School, I teach five sections of Algebra I and Geometry, about 140 students, roughly a quarter of whom have IEPs or are English learners. With our special education co-teacher, I redesigned unit assessments so students can show understanding through a written explanation, a worked problem or a short recorded explanation. Over two years, the share of my Algebra I students passing the end-of-course exam rose from 61% to 74%, and the gap between students with and without IEPs narrowed.

I also think the hour after the bell matters. I run our math club, which grew from six regulars to twenty-two, and I send a short weekly update to families in English and Spanish so nobody is surprised by a grade. When a student starts slipping, a parent usually hears from me before the progress report goes out.

Northfield's move to standards-based grading and your math department's professional learning community are a big part of why I'm applying; they're conversations I've been having informally with colleagues for two years. I hold an Illinois Professional Educator License with a mathematics endorsement. I'd be glad to teach a demonstration lesson or share sample unit plans, and I'm available to interview any afternoon. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Daniel Kowalski

Why this teacher cover letter works

Opening

It opens with a real classroom moment, a question every math teacher hears, and the teacher's answer to it. A principal can picture the lesson before reaching the second paragraph.

Evidence of learning

The second paragraph names the class load and student needs, describes one concrete practice (flexible assessment with a co-teacher) and gives a measured result. Results tied to the teacher's own students are more credible than school-wide figures.

Relationships beyond class

Clubs, family communication and early intervention show the teacher understands that the job extends past the lesson plan, something hiring committees usually ask about in interview.

School research

Mentioning the school's grading approach and department structure proves the letter was written for Northfield. Placing the license here keeps the opening focused on teaching.

Close

Offering a demonstration lesson and sample unit plans mirrors how many schools hire, and gives the principal a clear next step.

Alternative opening paragraphs

New teacher after student teaching

During my student teaching semester at Lakeshore Middle School, my cooperating teacher handed me her most restless seventh-grade science class for the full spring unit. By May, they were designing their own water-filter experiments and presenting results to the class. I'm completing my teaching license this month and applying for the Grade 7 Science Teacher position at Cedar Grove Middle School.

Career changer into teaching

For eight years I worked as a civil engineer, and the part of the job I looked forward to most was training new graduates on site. I've now completed an alternative certification program in secondary mathematics and spent a year as a long-term substitute. I'm applying for your Geometry Teacher opening because I'd like to show students where math actually gets used.

International school teacher

I've taught English at a bilingual secondary school in Madrid for five years, preparing students for IGCSE exams and coordinating our school's debate program. I'm applying for the Secondary English Teacher position at Al Noor International School in Doha because your IB curriculum and multilingual student body match the classroom I've built my practice around.

What do principals look for in a teacher cover letter?

O*NET's profile of secondary school teachers lists tasks such as instructing through lectures, discussions and demonstrations, establishing rules and procedures for maintaining order, adapting teaching methods and materials to students' varying needs, and preparing and grading assessments. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that public school teachers need a state-issued certification or license and lists communication skills among the most important qualities.

A strong letter gives evidence for each part of the job:

  • Instruction: one lesson, unit or approach that works, and why
  • Differentiation: how you support students with IEPs, English learners and advanced learners
  • Classroom management: routines and relationships, described briefly
  • Results: assessment data, growth, attendance or engagement you can stand behind
  • Community: families, colleagues, clubs and coaching

How to show classroom results without overclaiming

Teaching results are shared work, so describe your part honestly and use data you can explain.

Weak: I am a passionate educator who helps all students succeed.

Strong: Over two years, the share of my Algebra I students passing the end-of-course exam rose from 61% to 74%, after I redesigned unit assessments with our special education co-teacher.

If you don't have test data, use other evidence: growth on benchmark assessments, more students completing homework, a reading program that doubled the number of books students finished, or a club that grew. Keep student information anonymous.

Teacher cover letters for other countries

Licensing and vocabulary change by country, so mirror the job posting.

Market What to mention
US State license and endorsements; grade levels; IEP and ELL experience
England Qualified teacher status (QTS) and key stages; the government explains how to qualify to teach in England
International schools Curriculum experience (IB, IGCSE, A level, American or British), plus home-country license
Gulf Curriculum, license and attested degree; check the local education authority's rules

Rules change, so confirm requirements with the official licensing body before applying.

Common teacher cover letter mistakes

  • Opening with your teaching philosophy in abstract terms. Show it through a classroom example instead.
  • Using the same letter for every school. Mention something specific: a program, curriculum, schedule or value the school states.
  • Leaving out your license, certification or endorsements. Many districts screen for them first.
  • Claiming school-wide results as your own. Describe your students and your role.
  • Forgetting the subject and grade level in the first paragraph.
  • Writing more than one page. Hiring committees often read dozens of letters for one opening.

Frequently asked questions

Include the subject and grade level you're applying for, your license or certification, one classroom approach with evidence it works, how you support different learners, your work with families and colleagues, and a specific reason you want to teach at that school. Close with an offer to teach a demo lesson or share materials.
Use your student teaching or practicum as your main example. Describe the class, a unit you taught and how you knew students were learning. Add tutoring, coaching, camp counseling or substitute teaching. Mention your license status or expected date, and connect your interest to something specific about the school.
Briefly, and through an example rather than a statement. Many schools ask for a separate philosophy statement, so your letter doesn't need to repeat it. One sentence about what you believe, followed by what that looks like in your classroom, is more convincing than a paragraph of principles.
Keep it to one page and about 250 to 400 words. Three or four paragraphs are enough: an opening with the role and a classroom moment, evidence of student learning, your work beyond the lesson, and a close tied to the school. Principals often read many letters for each opening.
If you have results you can explain, yes. Use figures for your own students, describe the period and say what you changed. If test data isn't available or meaningful for your subject, use other evidence such as benchmark growth, completion rates, attendance or student work.
Address it to the principal or the person named in the posting, often a principal, department head or district human resources contact. School websites usually list the principal. If you're applying through a district portal for several schools, "Dear Hiring Committee" works well.
