CV vs Resume: The Real Difference (and Which One Each Country Expects)

In the US a CV is a long academic record; in the UK, Europe, the Gulf and much of Asia and Africa, "CV" simply means the job application document. Here is the real difference, a comparison table, a country-by-country map and when you need a true academic CV.

CV vs Resume Which to Send?: What each country expects, over a photo of an EZProCV resume template

Quick answer: In the US and Canada, a resume is a one to two page summary of your experience tailored to a job, while a CV is a longer academic record of research, publications and teaching. In the UK, Ireland, Europe, the Gulf, South Asia and Africa, "CV" simply means the standard job document, which works like a resume. Use the word the job ad uses.

The CV vs resume question confuses almost everyone who applies for jobs in more than one country. In New York a CV is a long academic document; in London, Dubai or Nairobi "CV" is just what everyone calls the job application document.

This guide explains both meanings, compares them side by side, shows which document each country expects, and covers the true academic CV. By the end you'll know exactly what to send and what to call it.

What is the difference between a CV and a resume?

There are two separate answers, depending on where you are.

In the US and Canada:

  • A resume is a short, tailored summary of your experience, skills and education, usually one or two pages.
  • A CV (curriculum vitae, Latin for "course of life") is a full record of an academic or research career: degrees, research, publications, presentations, grants, teaching and awards. MIT's career office calls it a "comprehensive scholarly record" (MIT CAPD).

In most of the rest of the world:

  • CV is the everyday word for the job application document. It does the same job as an American resume.
  • "Resume" may be understood but is less common, except in places with strong US influence such as the Philippines, India and parts of the Gulf.

MIT notes the same split: outside the US, "the term 'CV' is used for all opportunities" in some countries, so you should tailor the document to the position.

Why do personal details differ between a CV and a resume?

The biggest visible difference between countries isn't the name of the document; it's what personal information goes at the top.

The University of Sheffield's careers service notes that some countries expect details such as nationality, gender, marital status or date of birth, while the UK and USA don't, because anti-discrimination laws make that information unnecessary. It adds that in parts of Europe and Asia a photograph is often standard practice (University of Sheffield). The UK's National Careers Service says you should not include your age, date of birth, marital status or nationality.

Example headers:

US resume: Daniel Ortiz · Chicago, IL · daniel.ortiz@example.com · +1 555 0134 · linkedin.com/in/danielortiz-example

UK CV: Priya Nair · Manchester · priya.nair@example.com · 07700 900123

Gulf CV: Omar Haddad · Dubai, UAE · omar.haddad@example.com · +971 50 000 0000 · Nationality: Jordanian · Visa: Employment visa (transferable) · Notice period: 30 days

When do you need a true academic CV?

You need a full academic CV, in any country, when applying for:

  • university teaching or research posts (lecturer, assistant professor, postdoc)
  • PhD and some master's programs
  • research grants and fellowships
  • some senior medical and scientific roles

Typical academic CV sections, in a common order:

  1. Contact details and current position
  2. Education (with thesis title and supervisor)
  3. Research interests
  4. Publications (reverse chronological, your name in bold)
  5. Presentations and conference talks
  6. Grants, fellowships, awards and honors
  7. Teaching experience
  8. Professional service and memberships
  9. Skills (lab methods, languages, software)
  10. References

MIT says an academic CV is typically 2 to 4 pages for a younger professional and 4 to 7 pages for someone with more experience. The University of Sheffield describes the academic CV as having no page limit, "although still as concise as possible" (University of Sheffield).

How long is a CV compared with a resume?

  • US resume: one page early in your career, two pages with more experience.
  • UK, European or Gulf job CV: usually two pages.
  • Academic CV: as long as your record requires.

Canada's Job Bank says to limit your resume to two pages (Job Bank), and the EU's Europass advises against including "a full detailed history". For a full breakdown by experience level and country, see our guide on how long a resume should be.

How to turn a resume into a CV (and back)

Resume to UK, European or Gulf CV

  1. Switch the paper size to A4.
  2. Rename "Summary" to "Profile" or "Personal Profile" (UK) if you like.
  3. Expand to two pages if you have the experience.
  4. Add local details only where expected (photo, nationality and visa status for the Gulf; none for the UK).
  5. Change spelling to British English for UK and Irish employers.

UK or Gulf CV to US resume

  1. Remove photo, date of birth, nationality and marital status.
  2. Switch to US Letter paper and US spelling.
  3. Cut to one or two pages; keep the last 10–15 years.
  4. Rename "Profile" to "Summary".

Resume to academic CV

  1. Move education to the top.
  2. Add publications, presentations, grants and teaching in full.
  3. Remove the marketing-style summary; let the record speak.
  4. Don't cut for length; cut only for relevance and clarity.

Common mistakes with CVs and resumes

  • Sending a 6-page academic CV for a corporate job in the US.
  • Adding a photo and date of birth to a UK or US application.
  • Leaving out nationality and visa status for a Gulf role, where recruiters often look for them first.
  • Using US Letter paper for a UK or European job, which can print with odd margins.
  • Calling it a resume in the file name for a UK job (minor, but noticeable).

Frequently asked questions

Can I send a resume when a job ad asks for a CV?
Outside the US and Canada, yes: a job ad asking for a CV in London, Dubai, Lagos or Mumbai wants the standard job document, which is the same thing as a resume. Just follow local conventions such as A4 paper and the expected personal details. In the US or Canada, a request for a CV usually means an academic or medical post, so check whether they want publications and research listed.

What does "biodata" mean in India and Pakistan?
Biodata is an older South Asian term for a document that lists personal details such as date of birth, family background, religion and marital status alongside education. It's still used for some government forms and marriage proposals, but private employers now generally expect a resume or CV focused on skills and experience. Don't send a biodata unless the employer asks for one.

Is a CV longer than a resume in the UK?
A UK job CV is usually two sides of A4, so it can be a little longer than a one-page US resume, but it is not the long academic CV used in American universities. UK academic CVs, for lecturer or research roles, are a separate case and can run to several pages because they list publications, grants and teaching.

Do medical professionals need a CV or a resume?
In the US and Canada, physicians, residents and medical researchers usually use a CV that lists training, licensure, research and publications, while nurses and allied health staff typically use a resume. In the UK, Gulf and elsewhere, all health professionals use a CV, with registration numbers and clinical rotations clearly listed. Always check the application instructions, as some health systems use their own forms.

Should I call my file "CV" or "Resume" when I upload it?
Use the word the job ad uses, plus your name: "Aisha-Khan-CV.pdf" for a UK or Gulf job, "Aisha-Khan-Resume.pdf" for a US one. It's a small signal that you understand local norms. Avoid generic names like "document1.pdf" or "final-final-v3.pdf", which are easy to lose in a recruiter's downloads folder.
