Pakistan CV Format (2026): Local Jobs, Gulf Jobs and What to Leave Out

By EZProCV Editorial Team · Updated

The Pakistan CV format sits between two traditions. Many applicants still use the old biodata layout, with a passport photo, father's name, CNIC number, religion, domicile and marital status at the top. Recruiters at banks, telecoms, multinationals, software houses and Gulf employers increasingly expect a modern CV instead: concise, skills-focused and built around results.

This guide is for freshers and experienced professionals applying in Pakistan, and for the many Pakistanis applying to the Gulf and beyond. It covers which personal details to keep, how to list Matric, Intermediate and degree results, how government job applications differ, and what overseas employers and recruitment agencies expect.

In Pakistan "CV" and "resume" mean the same job document. We use "CV" here.

Quick answer: A Pakistani CV for private-sector jobs is a 1–2 page, reverse-chronological document with contact details, a short profile, skills, work experience, education (degree first, then Intermediate and Matric for early-career candidates) and certifications. A photo is common but optional. Leave out your CNIC number, father's name, religion and domicile; those belong on official application forms, not your CV.

Nationality / visa statusNot needed for jobs in Pakistan; state nationality and passport availability for overseas jobs

CV or biodata: which one do Pakistani employers want?

In Pakistan, "biodata" traditionally means a personal-details document used for marriage proposals, listing family background, caste, height and religion. Some job adverts, especially older-style or small-business ones, still say "send your biodata" when they mean a CV.

Document What it contains Use it for
CV Skills, experience, education, achievements, 1–2 pages Private-sector, multinational, NGO and overseas jobs
Biodata Personal and family details Marriage proposals; never needed for a professional job
Government application form Fixed fields: CNIC, domicile, father's name, academic record Federal and provincial public-sector recruitment

If an employer asks for biodata, send your CV. If you apply for a government post through the federal or a provincial public service commission, fill in their form exactly as instructed; the form, not your CV, is what gets assessed.

A profile that works

Replace the old "Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organization" objective with something specific:

PEC-registered civil engineer with 5 years in building and road construction across Punjab. Experienced in site execution, BOQs and contractor billing on projects up to PKR 450 million. Looking for a site engineer role on large infrastructure projects in Pakistan or the Gulf.

Freshers can do the same in two lines: degree, best project or internship, and the role you want.

Which personal details belong on a Pakistani CV?

Old templates put a large personal-details block on the first page. Here is what to keep and what to cut:

Detail Keep or cut? Why
Name, mobile, email, city Keep The basics a recruiter needs
LinkedIn Keep Expected for most office jobs
Photo Optional Common locally; use a professional headshot, never a selfie
Date of birth Optional Not needed to shortlist you
CNIC number Cut Sensitive ID data; share it only on official forms
Father's name (S/O, D/O) Cut Belongs on government forms
Religion, sect, caste Cut Not relevant to the job
Domicile Cut for private jobs Relevant to public-sector quotas, so it goes on the form
Marital status Optional Increasingly omitted
Passport details For overseas jobs only State that you hold a valid passport; give the number only when an employer or agency asks

Sharing your CNIC on a CV that gets forwarded around WhatsApp groups and job boards puts your identity at risk. Keep it off.

How to list Matric, Intermediate and degree results

Pakistani employers, especially banks, telecoms and graduate programs, often screen on academic records. Present them in reverse order, highest qualification first:

BSc Civil Engineering | Fictional University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore | 2021 | CGPA 3.4/4.0 Intermediate (FSc Pre-Engineering) | BISE Lahore | 2017 | 958/1100 Matric (Science) | BISE Lahore | 2015 | 1012/1100

Tips:

  • Always show the scale: CGPA 3.4/4.0 or marks 958/1100.
  • O and A Level candidates list subjects and grades, e.g. A Levels: Mathematics A, Physics A, Chemistry B.
  • After about three to five years of experience, you can drop Matric and Intermediate unless a form requires them.
  • If you studied abroad, or hold O/A Levels and need them recognized, the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) handles equivalence and attestation for school-level qualifications. Degree attestation, often needed for overseas jobs, is handled by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

How to write work experience that stands out

Recruiters in Pakistan see many CVs that list duties. Show impact instead.

Weak:

Responsible for site supervision and quantity surveying.

Strong:

Supervised structural works on a 9-storey commercial building, coordinating 3 subcontractors and closing all snag items 2 weeks before handover.

Prepared BOQs and monthly IPCs for a PKR 450 million road project, catching measurement errors that saved PKR 6 million (fictional example).

For every role:

  1. Start each bullet with an action verb.
  2. Add a number: PKR value, volume, team size, time saved.
  3. Name the tools and standards you used (AutoCAD, Primavera, SAP, IFRS, FIDIC).
  4. Put internships, freelance work on international platforms and final-year projects in this section if you're a fresher.

Job portals and ATS in Pakistan

Private-sector hiring in Pakistan runs mostly through job portals such as Rozee.pk and LinkedIn, company career pages, referrals, recruitment firms and university career offices. Many banks, telecoms and multinationals use an applicant tracking system (ATS), software that stores CVs and lets recruiters search them by keyword.

To get shortlisted:

  • Use the exact job title and skills from the ad. If it says "Relationship Manager", don't write only "RM".
  • Keep a simple layout: clear headings, no text in images, no tables inside tables.
  • Send a text-based PDF named with your name and the role.
  • Write a short cover email or cover letter that names the position. The cover letter builder has templates you can adapt.

More detail is in how to make your resume ATS-friendly.

Applying from Pakistan to jobs in the Gulf and abroad

Gulf employers recruit heavily from Pakistan, and their CV expectations differ from local norms:

Official channels. Overseas employment from Pakistan is regulated by the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment, which oversees licensed Overseas Employment Promoters (private recruitment agencies) and the Protector of Emigrants offices where emigrants register before departure. The government-run Overseas Employment Corporation also recruits for overseas employers. As of October 2026, check the current procedure and an agency's license on those sites before paying any fee, and be wary of anyone promising a visa in exchange for upfront cash. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

Many Gulf employers also ask for attested degree certificates at the visa stage, so start HEC attestation early.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Keep the CV to one page as a fresher and two with experience
  • Lead with a profile and key skills matched to the job ad
  • Show CGPA or marks with the scale, highest qualification first
  • Quantify results with PKR values, volumes and team sizes
  • Mention professional registration such as PEC where it applies
  • Add nationality, passport status and notice period for Gulf jobs

Don't

  • Don't put your CNIC number on a CV
  • Don't send a marriage-style biodata to an employer
  • Don't list religion, caste, sect or father's name
  • Don't use a selfie or casual photo; use a professional headshot or none
  • Don't copy duties from your job description instead of results
  • Don't pay an unlicensed agent for an overseas job or visa

Frequently asked questions

No. Your CNIC number is sensitive identity information, and CVs get forwarded, printed and posted in job groups. Employers that need it, such as government departments or a company at the offer stage, will ask on a form or during onboarding. Your name, phone and email are enough for a recruiter to contact you.
No, but it is common and widely accepted. Many local employers are used to seeing one, and Gulf employers often expect it. Multinationals and software companies generally don't need a photo. If you include one, use a recent, professional headshot with a plain background. A low-quality or casual photo hurts more than leaving it out.
Yes if you are a fresher or early in your career, because banks, telecoms and graduate programs often check them. List the board, year and marks with the total. Once you have several years of solid experience, you can keep just your degree and higher qualifications, unless an application form asks for the full academic record.
A CV is a professional document about your skills, experience and education. A biodata is a personal-details document, usually used for marriage proposals, covering family background, religion and physical details. If an employer asks for your biodata, they almost always want your CV. Never send personal or family details that are irrelevant to the job.
Keep the same structure but add nationality, passport availability, notice period and often a professional photo near the top. Put any Gulf experience first and name the country. Start degree attestation early, since Gulf employers often ask for attested certificates at the visa stage. See our guides to the UAE resume format and the Qatar CV format.
English. Almost all private-sector, multinational and overseas employers in Pakistan expect an English CV, and job portals are searched in English. List Urdu, along with any regional languages and Arabic, in your languages section. If a specific local employer or government form asks for Urdu, follow that instruction.
