Civil Engineer Resume Example (2026): Template, Summary and Skills

By EZProCV Editorial Team · Updated

This civil engineer resume example works for site, transportation, water resources, structural and public works engineers, from new graduates with an EIT to licensed principals. It includes a complete sample resume as plain text, summaries for three career stages, before-and-after bullets, a project list format, and how licensing and CV norms change in Canada, the UK, the Gulf and India.

Hiring managers in engineering firms and public agencies read resumes for scope and responsibility: what did you design, how big was it, did you own it, and did it get built on time and on budget? Bullets that only say "performed calculations" or "prepared drawings" miss all four.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects civil engineer employment to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, with about 22,700 openings a year, and reports a median annual pay of $100,840 in May 2025. It also notes that entry-level civil engineers don't need a license, but those who offer services to the public usually must be licensed as Professional Engineers (BLS).

Quick answer: A strong civil engineer resume puts your license status (EIT or P.E.) beside your name, then a summary naming your discipline, years and the size of projects you deliver. Experience bullets should quantify scope, construction value, budget and schedule results, and the software you used. Add a short project list for senior roles, and keep the layout single-column so applicant tracking systems read it correctly.

What should a civil engineer resume include?

Build the page in this order:

  1. Header: name with license ("Arjun Mehta, P.E."), city, phone, email, LinkedIn.
  2. Summary: discipline, years, project types and size, and key software.
  3. Experience: employer, title, dates, then bullets on scope, your role and results.
  4. Licenses and certifications: P.E. or EIT with state, plus items like QSD/QSP, OSHA 30 or ENV SP.
  5. Education: degree and school; add a master's or thesis if relevant to the job.
  6. Skills and software: design areas plus the tools in the posting.
  7. Project list (optional): for senior and consultant roles.

O*NET's task list for civil engineers covers directing construction work, inspecting sites, computing loads and flows, and designing transportation and hydraulic systems. Show which of those you own, and at what scale.

How do you write a civil engineer resume summary?

Use license + discipline + years + project scope + software + one result.

Transportation engineer (P.E., Texas) with seven years designing arterial roadways, intersections and signal systems for city and state clients. Delivered PS&E packages for projects up to $45 million in OpenRoads Designer, with no major addenda on the last six bids. Experienced in traffic studies and public meetings.

Avoid generic lines like "detail-oriented engineer seeking challenging role". Name the work: the discipline, the client type and the scale.

How do you quantify civil engineering experience?

Engineering results are easy to measure once you look for them:

  • Scope: lane-miles, acres, building floor area, pipe length, flow in MGD or cfs.
  • Value: construction cost or fee size of the projects you led.
  • Schedule and budget: delivered early, closed out under budget, change orders kept below a set percentage.
  • Estimating: how close your estimates came to bids.
  • Quality and compliance: review comments resolved, permits approved without resubmittal, safety record.
  • Leadership: staff supervised, EITs mentored, disciplines coordinated.

If you worked as part of a large team, say what you personally owned: "designed the drainage system for" is stronger and more honest than "worked on".

Should a civil engineer resume include a project list?

For consultants and senior engineers, yes. Firms often reuse project experience in proposals, and a compact list helps reviewers see fit fast. Keep the main bullets results-focused and put the list after experience:

Project Client type Construction value Your role
Elm Avenue widening and green streets City $28M Design lead
Cedar Creek watershed study County Study Hydraulic modeler
Oak Hollow culvert replacement County $6.5M Resident engineer

Use four to eight projects that match the job. Use fictional or generic names if a client requires confidentiality.

Where do PE, EIT and other licenses go?

Put your highest license after your name and list every license in its own section with discipline and state. In the U.S., the usual path is a degree, the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, several years of experience and the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam, which NCEES offers in civil specialties such as construction, geotechnical, structural, transportation, and water resources and environmental.

Write in-progress steps plainly: "EIT, California, 2024" or "PE exam scheduled April 2027". Licensure rules differ by state and country, so check with the board where you plan to practice.

How do you build an ATS-friendly civil engineer resume?

Use one column and standard headings, and type software names exactly as postings write them ("AutoCAD Civil 3D", not only "CAD"). Spell out a credential once with its acronym, such as "Engineer in Training (EIT)". Avoid putting a project table inside an image.

How a civil engineer resume changes by country

US & Canada

Use a two-page resume for experienced engineers, with P.E. after your name and states listed. In Canada, "engineer" is a protected title: you need a P.Eng. license (or EIT status) from the provincial or territorial regulator, such as PEO in Ontario or APEGA in Alberta (Engineers Canada). State your license or application status clearly.

UK & Ireland

Write a two-page CV. Professional titles such as Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Incorporated Engineer (IEng) are awarded through the Engineering Council, usually via the Institution of Civil Engineers; Engineers Ireland awards chartered status in Ireland. Mention Eurocodes, CDM duties, NEC contracts and your CSCS card where relevant. See UK CV format.

Gulf (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar)

Engineers working in Saudi Arabia must hold professional accreditation from the Saudi Council of Engineers, so state your SCE status. Gulf employers look for mega-project, FIDIC contract and authority approval experience, plus Primavera P6. Include nationality, visa status and notice period. See Saudi Arabia CV format and Qatar CV format.

India

List your B.E. or B.Tech (and M.Tech), GATE score if you are applying to public sector units, and the Indian Standard codes you design to, such as IS 456 and IS 800. Name software like STAAD.Pro, ETABS and AutoCAD. Site engineers should quantify built-up area, quantities and billing. See India CV format.

Common civil engineer resume mistakes

  • Describing tasks ("performed calculations") without project type, scale or outcome.
  • Claiming whole projects you only contributed to, instead of stating your actual role.
  • Leaving license status unclear, such as writing "P.E." before you are licensed.
  • Listing every software you have opened instead of the ones the job uses.
  • Putting project lists in images or text boxes that an ATS can't read.
  • Forgetting budget and schedule results, the numbers clients and managers care about most.

Frequently asked questions

One page is right for graduates and engineers with under five years of experience. Licensed engineers with substantial project histories usually need two pages. Consulting firms may also keep a longer project resume for proposals, but the version you send for a job should stay focused and readable.
Yes. Passing the FE exam and holding EIT or EI status shows you are on the licensure path, and many postings list it as a requirement. Put it after your name or in your licenses section with the state and year, and add your planned PE exam date once you have one.
Include it if you graduated in the last two or three years and it is strong, typically 3.0 or higher, or if the employer asks for it. After your first engineering job, drop it and let your project experience and license status speak instead.
List the main tools in your skills section, using their exact names, and mention them inside bullets where you used them, such as "built HEC-RAS models for a 450-acre watershed". That shows both the keyword and real use. Leave out tools you have not used in recent years.
Lead your summary with the target role and the skills that transfer. Site engineers moving into design should stress drawings, RFIs and constructability reviews; designers moving to site work should stress inspections, schedules and contractor coordination. A short cover letter explaining the move helps.
It is often optional, but useful for public agency roles, relocations and career changes. Keep it to one page, name one project that matches their work and confirm your license status. See our cover letter examples for formats you can adapt.
