Financial Analyst Resume Example (2026): Template, Summary and Skills

By EZProCV Editorial Team · Updated

This financial analyst resume example is for FP&A analysts, corporate finance and investment analysts, credit analysts and graduates heading into finance. It gives you a complete sample resume as text, summaries for three levels, before-and-after bullets, skills and ATS keywords, plus notes on what changes in the US, UK, Gulf and India.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes financial analysts as people who research and evaluate financial data, forecast trends, study companies' financial statements and recommend investments or business decisions in reports and presentations (BLS). A hiring manager wants evidence of exactly that chain: data, model, recommendation, result.

The sample below follows an FP&A path. If you work in investment or credit, keep the structure and swap the bullet themes using the guide sections.

Quick answer: A strong financial analyst resume shows that your analysis changed decisions. Open with a summary naming your area (FP&A, corporate finance, investment or credit) and one result, then write bullets on forecasts, models, savings and recommendations with numbers. List financial modeling, Excel, SQL and BI tools, show CFA or other progress correctly, and keep it to one page early in your career.

How to write a financial analyst resume summary

Three sentences, built like a good analyst memo:

  1. Your area (FP&A, corporate finance, equity research, credit) and years.
  2. One decision your analysis drove, with a number.
  3. Your strongest tools and any CFA or other progress.

Credit analyst with 5 years in commercial banking, covering a $400M portfolio of middle-market borrowers. Built an early-warning dashboard that flagged three deteriorating credits two quarters early. Strong in cash flow analysis, covenant testing and Moody's RiskCalc; Level III candidate in the CFA Program.

Skip "detail-oriented finance professional". Your numbers prove it.

What should financial analyst bullet points show?

The best bullets follow the analyst's chain: what you analyzed, what you recommended and what happened.

Area Strong evidence
FP&A Forecast accuracy, budget size owned, variances explained, savings found
Corporate development Deals modeled, deal size, decisions supported
Investment / equity research Coverage universe, models built, recommendations and performance
Credit Portfolio size, credits reviewed, losses avoided, early warnings
Reporting Hours saved, dashboards adopted, reporting cycle shortened

Give scale with every result ("for a $480M company", "$120M category P&L") so the reader can judge the weight of the work.

Which skills does a financial analyst resume need?

BLS names analytical, communication, computer, decision-making, detail and math skills as important qualities. O*NET's profile lists tools such as Excel, Power BI, Tableau, SQL Server, SAS, Stata, R, MATLAB, Oracle Hyperion and SAP (O*NET OnLine).

On the resume:

  • Be precise about Excel: three-statement models, INDEX/MATCH or XLOOKUP, data tables, Power Query, VBA.
  • List data skills such as SQL and Python separately; they set you apart.
  • Name the planning system (Anaplan, Hyperion, Adaptive) if you've used one.
  • Prove presentation skills with bullets about board packs or committee papers.

Many finance interviews include a modeling test, so only list what you can do under time pressure.

How do you list the CFA Program and other credentials?

CFA Institute says the CFA Program has three levels, each with an exam, and that charterholders also need 4,000 hours of relevant work experience over at least 36 months (CFA Institute). Until you earn the charter, describe your progress in full and never as a partial title. Wording such as "Passed Level II of the CFA Program" or "Level III candidate in the CFA Program" is the clear form; avoid "CFA Level II" or "CFA (Level II)". Check the current rules on the CFA Institute site before you finalize.

Other useful credentials: FINRA licenses for securities roles (BLS notes employers usually sponsor these after hiring), the CISI Investment Advice Diploma or CFA UK's Investment Management Certificate in the UK, and CPA or ACCA for analysts with an accounting background.

How to format a financial analyst resume

Finance recruiting is conservative. Use one page for under about five years of experience, a single column, standard headings and right-aligned dates. Put education near the top if you graduated in the last two years, along with GPA if it's strong and the employer asks for it.

The Compact One-Page layout in the EZProCV templates suits finance roles. Build your resume, check that every figure is consistent, and download a text-based PDF that applicant tracking systems can read. Then write a matching letter; see our financial analyst cover letter example.

How a financial analyst resume changes by country

US & Canada

One-page resume early on, no photo. BLS reports a median annual wage of $103,570 for financial analysts (May 2025) and projects 7% employment growth from 2025 to 2035, with about 29,500 openings a year (BLS). In Canada, mention IFRS experience and any CPA Canada or CFA progress.

UK & Ireland

Send a one- or two-page CV with no photo. For investment analyst roles, the National Careers Service lists pay from £28,000 (starter) to £75,000 (experienced) and names the CFA UK Investment Management Certificate and CISI Investment Advice Diploma as relevant qualifications (National Careers Service). See the UK CV format guide.

Gulf (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar)

Banks, sovereign funds and family groups value IFRS reporting, GCC market knowledge, Arabic and, for some roles, Islamic finance experience. CFA progress is widely recognized. Many CVs include a photo, nationality, visa status and notice period; EZProCV has optional fields for these. See the UAE resume format and Saudi Arabia CV format guides.

India

Show figures in INR (lakhs or crores) and name your area: FP&A, equity research, credit or investment banking. CA, CFA and MBA (Finance) credentials are common, so state yours precisely. Employers usually ask for current CTC and notice period. See the India CV format guide.

Common financial analyst resume mistakes

  • Writing "CFA Level II" as if it were a title. Describe your progress in full, as in "Passed Level II of the CFA Program".
  • Models with no outcome. Say what the model decided: savings approved, deal funded, price changed.
  • Numbers with no scale. "$3M savings" needs "for a $480M business" to mean something.
  • A two-page resume as a junior analyst. One tight page reads as better judgment.
  • Listing Python or SQL you can't use in a test. Finance interviews often include technical exercises.
  • Inconsistent figures. A number that differs between your summary and a bullet looks careless in a numbers job.

Frequently asked questions

If you graduated in the last two or three years and your GPA is strong, many finance employers expect to see it, especially banks and large companies with graduate programs. Put it next to your degree. Once you have a few years of experience, remove it and let your results speak.
Reframe your accounting work toward analysis: variance commentary, forecasts you supported, cost reviews and process improvements. Add modeling skills through courses or projects and list them clearly. A summary such as "CPA moving into FP&A" helps the reader. Compare the accountant resume example to see the different emphasis.
Excel comes first, at a level where you can build a three-statement model and scenario analysis quickly. After that, SQL for pulling data and a BI tool such as Power BI or Tableau for reporting are the most widely useful. Planning systems and Python are strong additions for FP&A and investment roles.
No. BLS says certification is not always required but can enhance professional standing. The CFA Program is most valued in investment management and research. For FP&A and corporate finance, experience, modeling skill and sometimes a CPA or MBA can matter as much. If you're enrolled, list your progress correctly.
Only if they are public and your employer allows it. Otherwise describe deals by type and size ("$26M warehouse acquisition", "4 middle-market sell-side deals"). Never share confidential client names or non-public numbers on a resume or in a shared link.
Often yes, particularly for graduate programs and smaller firms. Keep it to one page: your area of interest, one analysis that drove a decision and why this company. See our financial analyst cover letter example or start in the cover letter builder.
