Security Guard Resume Example (2026): Sample, License Section, Skills and Keywords

By EZProCV Editorial Team · Updated

This security guard resume example is for unarmed and armed security officers, concierge and front-desk security, CCTV operators, event security and site supervisors. It includes a complete sample resume, summaries for three levels, stronger bullets and the keywords security companies and property managers search for.

Security hiring starts with eligibility. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that most states require guards to be licensed where they work, with basic requirements of being at least 18, passing a background check and completing training, and that armed guards face stricter checks and firearms training (BLS). Your license and training should be visible in the first few lines.

BLS reports a median pay of $38,020 for security guards in May 2025 and projects 1% growth from 2025 to 2035, slower than average. That makes a clear, specific resume more important: you are competing on reliability, judgment and a clean record.

Quick answer: A security guard resume should show your guard license first (state registration, SIA in the UK, SIRA in Dubai), then a short summary naming the sites you have protected. List jobs with bullets on patrols, access control, incident reports, CCTV monitoring and response results. Add first aid, CPR and fire safety training, and skills such as de-escalation and report writing. Keep it to one page.

How do you list a security license on your resume?

Put your license in the headline ("Licensed Security Officer") and in a Licenses and Certifications section near the top. Include:

  • License type: unarmed, armed, door supervision, CCTV, close protection
  • Issuing body and region: state board, the UK Security Industry Authority (SIA), or Dubai's Security Industry Regulatory Agency (SIRA)
  • Expiry date if it renews within the next few months

In the UK, GOV.UK says door supervision, security guarding, close protection and public space surveillance (CCTV) are front-line licenses that require a license-linked qualification before you apply, that you must be 18 or over, and that applicants pass criminal record checks (GOV.UK). Armed officers in the US should list their firearms permit and the date of their last qualification.

What should a security guard resume summary say?

Three lines that tell a hiring manager what sites you can protect and how you behave under pressure:

  1. License and years of experience
  2. Site types: corporate, retail, healthcare, residential, events, industrial
  3. Core strengths: access control, CCTV, de-escalation, report writing
  4. One proof point: response time, incidents resolved, promotion

Licensed security officer with 7 years at corporate, hospital and event sites. Control access for 2,500 people a day, monitor 120+ cameras and resolve most incidents through de-escalation.

Avoid tough-guy language. Employers want calm judgment and customer service more than force.

How do you make security guard bullet points stronger?

O*NET lists the core tasks of security guards as securing buildings, patrolling to detect intrusions, giving basic first aid, answering alarms and controlling entry and exit to prevent theft (O*NET). Every applicant does these, so add scale and results.

Task Add
Access control Daily visitors, entry points, badge systems used
CCTV Number of cameras, incidents detected
Patrols Site size, checkpoints, response times
Incidents Number handled, resolved without force, reports written
Emergencies Drills run, evacuations, first aid given
Leadership Officers supervised, trainees, client feedback

Cut average alarm response time from 6 minutes to under 3 by redesigning patrol zones.

Which skills and training should a security guard include?

BLS names communication, interpersonal, observation and problem-solving skills as important qualities for security guards. Show them with training and examples:

  • Training: state guard course, de-escalation or crisis prevention, first aid, CPR and AED, fire safety, conflict management
  • Systems: CCTV and video management, access control and badge systems, alarm panels, guard tour apps, radios
  • Site knowledge: hospital emergency codes, retail loss prevention, event crowd management, residential concierge service

If you have military, police or corrections experience, describe it in civilian terms and focus on transferable skills.

What format and length should a security guard resume use?

One page, reverse-chronological, with clear headings: Summary, Licenses and Certifications, Experience, Skills, Education. Contract officers should name the security company as the employer and the site in brackets, as in the sample above, so employment dates stay continuous even when sites change.

You can build it with a free EZProCV template. If you also cover reception desks, look at the receptionist resume example for front-desk wording.

How a security guard resume changes by country

US & Canada

List your state guard license (and firearms permit if armed) or, in Canada, your provincial security worker license, such as Ontario's or British Columbia's. Mention guard training hours, first aid and CPR. No photo, age or date of birth.

UK & Ireland

Use "CV" and list your SIA license type (door supervision, security guarding, CCTV) and expiry date. Front-line licenses require a license-linked qualification first (GOV.UK). In Ireland, list your PSA license and QQI security qualification. See the UK CV format guide.

Gulf (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar)

In Dubai, guards work under SIRA licensing and training, and employers expect nationality, age, height, visa status and often a photo. Mention Gulf site types (malls, hotels, towers, events), languages such as Arabic, Hindi or Urdu, and any SIRA certificate. See the UAE resume format and Qatar CV format guides.

India

Mention training from a licensed private security agency, ex-servicemen status if relevant, and the site types you have guarded (ATMs, factories, IT parks, residential societies). Gulf recruiters hiring from India look for passport validity, height and language skills, so add them clearly.

Common security guard resume mistakes

  • Leaving out the license type, issuing body or expiry date.
  • Writing only duties ("patrolled the site") without site size, visitors or results.
  • Using aggressive language. Employers hire for calm judgment and service.
  • Listing every short contract site as a separate job, which looks like job-hopping. Group them under the security company.
  • Forgetting first aid, CPR, fire safety or de-escalation training.
  • Poor spelling and grammar. A resume is a writing sample, and report writing is part of the job.

Frequently asked questions

Lead with your license or completed guard training, first aid and CPR. Then show reliability and customer service from retail, hospitality, warehouse or volunteer work, plus any military or cadet experience. Our customer service representative resume example shows how to write customer-facing bullets.
Give the license type, issuing body and expiry on your resume. Add the number only if the application asks for it, since employers verify licenses during hiring. In the UK, employers can check SIA licenses on the public register, so accuracy matters.
An armed security resume adds the firearms permit, the date of the last qualification, weapons training and the stricter background checks you have passed. It should also show sound judgment, such as incidents resolved without escalation. Unarmed resumes focus on access control, patrols, customer service and reporting.
Show the number of officers and sites you managed, scheduling and post orders you wrote, client relationships, audits, training programs and results such as fewer incidents, lower overtime or improved audit scores. Add leadership training and any security management certifications.
Many security companies don't require one, but a short letter helps for in-house roles at hospitals, universities or corporate sites. Mention your license, the site types you know and your shift availability. EZProCV's cover letter builder is free.
Not in the US, Canada, UK or Ireland, where photos are usually left off. Many Gulf employers do ask for a photo and physical details such as height. EZProCV lets you add an optional photo field for those applications.
